You can avoid many spam calls using our auto-attendant features. With an auto-attendant, someone calls your OpenPhone number. Then they can hear menu options and dial a number to reach your team (eg. press 0 for customer service). Since robocalls can't interact with auto-attendants, you can eliminate most spam.

How to set up an auto-attendant in OpenPhone

1. Open into the OpenPhone web or Mac desktop app.

2. Click "Settings" from the left-hand menu.

3. Under "Workspace", select "Phone Numbers".

4. Select the phone number you want to have an auto-attendant.

5. Scroll down to “Phone Menu” and click “v”.

6. Click “Set a greeting message”. This is what callers after calling your phone number. You’ll see there are options to upload a file, record, or use text to speech for your greeting message.

7. Below “Menu Options”, enter in the key and voice commands your callers can enter along with where those options are routed (under “Destination”).

Note: You'll need a Premium or Enterprise plan to use advanced auto-attendant options including the ability to send to voicemail or a specific member of your phone number.

8. Under “If no option is selected”, specify what you want to occur if a caller stays on the line without selecting an option.

9. Click “Save”.

You can go back and update your phone menu settings here anytime.

How to block phone numbers

If you’ve already received spam from a specific phone number, you can also block them in OpenPhone. Here’s how:

1. Click into the conversation.

2. Tap “...”, located top right of the conversation.

3. Click 🚫 “Block”.

Spam calls are unfortunately an industry wide-problem. We’re constantly trying to improve our anti-spam measures. Most of the time, spam calls will go away on their own once you put these spam prevention steps in place. However, sometimes spam calls can overwhelm your line. In these cases, you may want to change your number.
